What is a J-1 Visa?

J-1 visa is designated for exchange visitors who visit the United States on the purposes of lecturing, teaching, conducting research, consulting, receiving training, summer work travel, student, short-term scholar or undergoing medical education (physician).

The purpose of a J-1 Visa is to foster cultural and professional exchanges to enhance knowledge and skills through education, the arts, special training etc.

J-1 Visa, the Exchange Visitor Program, is for nonimmigrant – temporary stay. Employment is authorized only under the designated exchange program. It is important to know the terms and conditions of your exchange programs to see if any restrictions apply.

J-1 holders  - J-2 Classification
Family consisting of spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21 can be sponsored under J-2 classification. They can be entitled to work authorization as J-2 holders.

What is the process?

In addition to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, the United States Department of State plays a crucial role in administering J-1 Visas. Contact us to help you find a sponsor for the trainee seeking a J-1 visa. We will then help your host connect with the sponsor and begin your process. It is important to find a licensed immigration attorney for your J1 needs since the process needs ample attention due to varying time restrictions.

To apply for a J1 visa make sure to work with a licensed immigration attorney to file the following documents:

1)   Submit a Form DS-2019, Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status

2)   Work closely with your Sponsoring agency to work on this DS-2019 form

3)   Submit the DS-156 Nonimmigrant Visa application

4)   Submit the DS-157 Supplemental which explains your travel plans

5)   Submit the DS-158 which explains your contact and work history

6)   Once completed submit the form to the U.S. Department of State Embassy or Consulate.

7)   Highly encouraged to submit as early as possible.

Granted a J-1 Visa, it is to be noted that one cannot enter the U.S. more than 30 days before the start of the Exchange program.

Please contact us, (+1) 480-626-0641, if you are planning on coming to the United States on a J-1 Visa. Our friendly and personable attorneys have many years of experience and will be happy to assist you through this process.
